Domaine des Andeols: A Design Retreat Beneath the Provençal Sun

Florence Consul
By Florence Consul ·

In the Luberon, where the light brushes the hills, lavender fields, and hilltop villages, Domaine des Andeols cultivates an intimate, artistic, and deeply peaceful vision of Provence. Just minutes from Gordes, Roussillon, and Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt, this discreet address unfolds its independent houses, artworks, scented gardens, and Provençal table at the heart of an unspoiled landscape. Between bold design, absolute silence, sun-filled gastronomy, and understated elegance, a stay here becomes a rare interlude, created for travelers attuned to space, the beauty of materials, and the emotion of lived-in places.

A Secret Provence Between Vineyards and Hilltop Villages

In the heart of the Luberon, just minutes from Saint-Saturnin-lès-Apt and close to the emblematic villages of Gordes and Roussillon, Domaine des Andeols belongs to a rare, luminous, and preserved Provence. Between lavender fields, olive groves, vineyards, hilltop villages, and ochre quarries, this confidential address offers an ideal base for exploring one of the most inspiring regions in the South of France, far from the crowds and predictable itineraries. Here, nature sets the rhythm, inviting both contemplation and discovery: golf in Villars, cycling between wine estates, hikes through the hills, or moments of well-being at the domaine. In this exceptional setting, space, silence, and simplicity compose a discreet luxury, deeply connected to the Provençal soul.

A Sanctuary of Art Between Stone and Lavender

At Domaine des Andeols, style does not merely dress the place: it stages it. Behind this vision is the signature of Olivier Massart, a local child who became a grand orchestrator of dreams, revolutionizing the art of the fashion show by introducing narrative, light, music, and emotion. From Paco Rabanne to Kenzo, from Yves Saint Laurent to major international celebrations, this master of scenography learned how to transform every space into an experience. At Andeols, the former family home inherited from his grandfather, he has created perhaps his most intimate setting: an open-air work of art where contemporary architecture converses with stone, light, and the landscapes of the Luberon. The independent Maisons and Suites, scattered among olive trees, cypresses, and lavender, form a confidential hamlet, both rooted in its region and resolutely singular.

Art is omnipresent here, yet never ostentatious. More than 250 works, paintings, photographs, sculptures, and pieces of furniture punctuate the spaces like fragments of an intimate collection. Some pieces, once exhibited in museums, now find their place on the domaine’s walls, while the gardens welcome sculptures and installations in an almost theatrical setting. The hotel evokes, in turn, a private gallery, a house for aesthetes, and a sanctuary of nature, where books, objects, pure lines, and plays of color contribute to a refined, free, and deeply personal aesthetic.

But the true privilege of Andeols may lie in its absolute seclusion. Set alone amid 32 hectares, the domaine seems removed from the world, with no neighbors, no noise, and no interruption on the horizon. This chosen solitude gives the place its rare strength: nature is felt everywhere, in the silence, in the shifting light of the Luberon, in the scent of the fields and the presence of the gardens. Although only minutes from the region’s emblematic villages, Andeols offers the precious feeling of being far from everything, in an intimate, preserved, and profoundly soothing Provence.

Behind Provençal Facades, the Boldness of Design

Accommodation here is experienced as a collection of private addresses, each with its own atmosphere, architecture, and intimate relationship with nature. The domaine brings together 8 Nature Suites with sleek design, opening onto the landscapes of the Luberon through vast picture windows, as well as independent Maisons and Villas designed to preserve everyone’s privacy. Among them, 4 small villas with one double bedroom stand alongside 6 larger villas with two double bedrooms, including Maison du Voyageur, Maison Rouge, Maison des Lointains, Maison des Terrasses, Maison de Toujours, and Maison de l’Artiste. There is also Maison des Cascades, a large three-bedroom villa, Maison Principale with its 11 bedrooms, the Poolhouse, the Atelier d’Artiste with private pool, as well as new rooms expected for the 2026 season. Everywhere, space, light, noble materials, artworks, and design pieces compose a discreet luxury, profoundly Provençal.

We stayed at Maison Alice, a 40 m² cocoon ideal for a couple, imagined as a subtle play of contrasts. Behind its traditional Provençal architecture lies a decidedly design-led interior, where omnipresent blue envelops the space in a softness that is both graphic and calming. It captures the singular spirit of Andeols: that of a private, intimate, and inspired house, where every detail seems carefully chosen to create a personal atmosphere rather than a simple decor. Between authenticity, comfort, and contemporary audacity, Maison Alice offers an elegant interlude, at once warm and highly distinctive, perfectly faithful to the domaine’s artistic soul.

Sunlit Terrace, Homemade Cake, and Freshly Pressed Juice

Breakfast is enjoyed on the terrace, in the calm of the garden, with Provençal greenery as a backdrop, gently inviting relaxation. The generous, sunlit table brings together fresh bread, pastries, homemade cake, sliced fruit, jams, honey, freshly pressed juice, tea, and coffee, in a spirit that is simple yet particularly refined. The very tempting buffet completes this lovely selection, while eggs are prepared to order according to one’s wishes. A fresh and indulgent morning interlude, ideal for beginning the day in the softness of the place.

Le Platane, A Local Feast in the Heart of Nature

Beneath the majestic shade of a four-hundred-year-old plane tree, Le Platane embodies the gourmet soul of Domaine des Andeols: a luminous, generous Provence deeply rooted in its terroir. Below the domaine, near a pond of water lilies and clear springs, the table unfolds in a natural setting of rare poetry, between relaxed elegance and country art de vivre. More than a restaurant, it is a suspended interlude, where one lunches beneath the foliage, dines in the golden softness of the Luberon, and sometimes even sits on a wooden terrace moored among the branches of the venerable tree. When the weather does not allow dinner beneath the plane tree, the restaurant dining room, animated by Jean-Charles de Castelbajac’s joyful fresco, extends that same feeling of an inhabited, elegant, and deeply alive Provence.

The cuisine celebrates the seasons with refined sincerity, favoring produce from the domaine’s vegetable garden, orchards, olive trees, and vineyards, complemented by a thoughtful selection of local producers. Freshly picked herbs, sun-drenched vegetables, house olive oil, fish, Provençal fruit, and market treasures come together in Mediterranean plates that are at once simple, precise, and generous. This instinctive gastronomy tells the story of the Luberon at its most authentic: the freshness of a just-harvested vegetable, the fragrance of an oil, the sweetness of ripe fruit, and the conviviality of a table designed for sharing.

Our dinner began with a glass of rosé from the domaine, Déjeuner sur l’herbe, whose name pays tribute to Claude Monet, before a starter titled Printemps d’asperge, combining asparagus, perfect egg, hollandaise, and truffle. We continued with L’Aubrac en Provence, where beef met new potatoes, candied turnips, and a light jus. For dessert, Retour du verger brought together Carpentras strawberries, verbena, and fromage blanc in a delicate, summery finale.

The Provençal Art of Living Between Treatments, Sun, and Cypresses

The services and facilities celebrate a Provençal art de vivre where well-being, nature, and conviviality meet with discreet elegance. The treatment spaces invite deep relaxation, with enveloping massages, precise gestures, and rituals inspired by the natural materials of Provence, while the swimming pool, bathed in sunshine and open to the landscapes of the Luberon, offers a refreshing refuge made for contemplation. To extend this reconnection with the open air, the tennis court turns each rally into a sporty and meditative interlude, while the outdoor fitness area allows guests to train to the rhythm of the light, scents, and surrounding silence. These moments of relaxation are complemented by spaces for play and conviviality, where table football, a cocktail on the terrace, or a conversation at sunset create the simple pleasures that give the place its soul.

My Review

Domaine des Andeols leaves behind the rare memory of a Provence experienced from within, between the silence of the hills, the power of the landscapes, artistic audacity, and the softness of hospitality without ostentation. One comes for the beauty of the Luberon, the proximity of the hilltop villages, and the intimacy of houses scattered through nature, but above all, one remembers an atmosphere. From Maison Alice to dinners beneath the plane tree, from artworks dotted throughout the gardens to suspended moments beside the pool, everything comes together to create a precious address for travelers seeking space, emotion, and discreet elegance. A deeply inspired refuge in the heart of the Luberon!

What I liked:

  • A superb 32-hectare property surrounded by nature, beautifully maintained, where olive trees and vines create a setting as authentic as it is elegant.
  • The dining stands out for its high quality, with a delicious dinner and a particularly successful breakfast.
  • The Junior Suite charms with its highly design-led, contemporary style, an aesthetic signature quite unique in the region.

What I regretted:

  • One might, however, regret a certain lack of natural light in Maison Alice.
