Between Sky and Earth: The Unique Experience of the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei
Perched atop the capital of Taiwan, the Shangri-La Far Eastern stands majestically as the tallest hotel in Taipei, offering a breathtaking visual spectacle. With its 420 rooms and suites combining modern comfort and subtle elegance, this prestigious hotel is not just a place to stay; it's an invitation to dive into a world of luxury and refinement in the heart of Taipei. Gourmets will be enticed by the nine dining and bar options, including the famous Shang Palace, a culinary gem whose flavors linger in the memory.
A Haven of Luxury in Taipei's Business District
Opened in 1994, the Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei marked the prestigious hotel chain's first foray into Taiwan. Dominating the capital's urban landscape, this establishment is recognized as the tallest hotel in the city, rising majestically over 43 floors in the heart of the dynamic business district.
Strategically located on Tun Hwa South Road, famous for its elegance and leafy avenues, the hotel enjoys a privileged location. It is in close proximity to the Taipei World Trade Convention and Exhibition Center, ideal for business travelers. Moreover, its location offers easy access to various tourist attractions of the Taiwanese capital, allowing visitors to easily immerse themselves in the city's rich cultural and historical heritage.
A Harmonious Blend of Modern and History
Having undergone an ambitious $50 million renovation program completed in 2015, the 5-star establishment offers a setting that combines contemporary sumptuousness and historical richness. Its design, inspired by the Song Dynasty era (960-1279), is a celebration of Chinese art and culture.
From the moment they enter the majestic lobby, visitors are greeted by an impressive collection of sculptures and paintings, specially commissioned for the hotel. These carefully selected works of art are not mere decorations; they tell stories from this unique period, inviting guests on a journey through time.
Splendor and Panoramic Views in the Rooms
The Shangri-La Far Eastern Taipei is distinguished by its 420 luxurious rooms, including 37 suites, each offering a spectacular view of the city, with some boasting a unique panorama of the famous Taipei 101. These rooms, combining comfort and elegance, are characterized by their high ceilings, illuminating refined interiors. The generous size of the rooms makes them some of the most spacious in the city.
Each living space has been meticulously designed to evoke an ambiance of serenity and luxury, with elegant cream color palettes, dark woodwork, and contemporary Asian decor enhanced with subtle touches. The rooms are equipped with spacious wardrobes and marble bathrooms.
An iconic example is the magnificent Premier Room with a View of Taipei 101, covering 58 square meters, where we stayed. Equipped with large windows, it offers a sense of open space with panoramic views of the iconic Taipei 101, creating an exceptional visual experience and a relaxing atmosphere, ideal for unwinding after a busy day in the Taiwanese capital.
The Culinary Magic of Shangri-La Taipei: Between Tradition and Modernity
The gastronomy at the Shangri-La Taipei hotel is a true culinary journey, with nine restaurants and bars offering a variety of flavors and atmospheres. The choice is broad and tempting, from the Shanghai Pavilion with its Shanghai, Taiwanese, and Sichuan specialties, to the Marco Polo Restaurant and Ibuki. These establishments provide a diverse dining experience, catering to all tastes.
For quieter moments, the Marco Polo Lounge, Li Bai Lounge, and Lobby Court are perfect for enjoying drinks and light snacks throughout the day, while the Cake Room offers a selection of delicacies.
Discovering Cantonese Flavors at Shang Palace
However, the crown jewel of the hotel is undoubtedly the Shang Palace, its signature restaurant. Specializing in Guangdong cuisine, this elegant Cantonese restaurant presents a modern decor and a varied selection of signature dishes. Led by Chef Liew, the Shang Palace excels in preparing Cantonese classics, such as roasted duck and dim sum, accompanied by a vast collection of teas.
Our experience at the Shang Palace was memorable, particularly the Peking duck served in three parts: sliced duck with crispy skin accompanied by pancakes, a congee with duck and dried scallops, and the fried duck served with lettuce leaves. These Cantonese specialties were a delight for the taste buds, beautifully complemented by a delicious Taiwanese Oolong tea, encapsulating the essence of the hotel's rich culinary tradition.
As for the Shang Palace's dining room, we were charmed by its decor that combines Cantonese charm with touches of modernity. A gourmet evening perfectly completed by impeccable table service.
At Breakfast Time
We had our breakfast at the Café at Far Eastern, which offers a vast buffet including the usual classics as well as local specialties such as noodle soups. A perfectly suitable offering for this type of establishment!
Relaxation Side
The Health Club has an ultra-modern gym, an aerobics room offering a myriad of classes and relaxing facilities, including a sauna, steam room, and jacuzzi. Socie Spa offers a unique fusion of Japanese elegance and British luxury, providing a sanctuary for regeneration and holistic well-being in collaboration with the ESPA brand.
The Shangri-La Far Eastern also has an outdoor summer pool (7th floor) and a year-round heated rooftop pool (43rd floor) offering incredible views of the city, Taipei 101, and the surrounding mountains.
My Review
My stay at the Shangri-La's Far Eastern in Taipei was an unforgettable experience, combining luxury, comfort, and cultural immersion. The hotel offers a spectacular view especially from the elegant Premier Room with Taipei 101 View where I stayed, but also from the restaurants and not to forget the rooftop pool perched on the 43rd floor. The gastronomy at the Shangri-La Taipei is a chapter of its own, like the Shang Palace which was a revelation. A luxury hotel in Taipei not to be missed for the world!
