La Quinta do Vallado: An Intimate Retreat in the Douro Valley

A road trip in northern Portugal would be incomplete without discovering the superb Douro region! With vineyards as far as the eye can see, typical small villages, and wineries, it's a great program! And for an even more luxurious experience, it's ideal to spend a few nights in a quinta! Let's take a look back at a dream stay at the heart of Quinta do Vallado!

Built in 1716 by Dona Antonia Adelaide Ferreira on the banks of the Corgo River, Quinta do Vallado is one of the oldest in the Douro Valley. Today, it is owned by direct descendants of this great lady recognized for her talents in wine production. But the quinta has not remained frozen in the 18th century; over the years, it has made modernizations, both in the vineyards and in production. The most beautiful architectural example is this superb building from 2009 that houses the boutique and the cellars.

A recognized winery

Quinta do Vallado is a recognized winery in the region, but also worldwide, with international distribution of its wines. With its 65 hectares of vineyards, they produce white, rosé, red, port, and olive oil. Delicious beverages that we had the opportunity to taste during the guided tour planned every day (included in the price of the night).

An intimate and luxurious hotel

In 2005, Quinta do Vallado began a new chapter by creating an intimate hotel with only 13 keys, distributed either in the old wing or in the modern wing. A welcome refuge for a handful of lucky people who can stay in the heart of this beautiful natural panorama. This confidential establishment reminds me of the atmosphere found in many "Relais & Châteaux," although it is not one of them.

For fans of classic style, head to the superb ocher building from the 18th century, which houses 5 rooms and suites with a traditional look. They have, of course, been perfectly renovated and offer optimal comfort for 21st century travelers.

8 keys with contemporary lines

In 2012, a modern building was added to the ensemble without altering the site, thanks to the use of schist stone that allows it to blend into the scenery. The building houses 8 keys, all in modernity, including the Superior Room on which we had set our sights.

The contemporary style is beautiful in this spacious room, also extended by a small balcony but especially by an incredible corner terrace. We took advantage of this beautiful sunny afternoon to laze there for a few hours while reading the decoration magazines available and enjoying the panorama of the vineyards. The show is even more magical at sunset, which we were able to admire while clinking glasses with a good red wine from the house. As for the bathroom, once again, comfort is the watchword with a bathtub and a shower, all with modern and seductive lines.

Local and Modern Cuisine

For cuisine, local and organic dishes are featured in a unique menu that changes with each meal. While the offer is tempting, we chose to dine at a restaurant in the nearby village of Peso da Régua that caught our eye during our visit!

The next morning, we enjoyed our breakfast once again on our terrace. The dishes offered are in keeping with the style of the establishment, neither more nor less, but the setting is undoubtedly the best asset to wake up to!

Discovering the Douro Region

As for activities, the region has plenty to offer! First and foremost, a night at Quinta do Vallado wouldn't be complete without a guided tour of the estate, which includes a wine tasting! The best way to learn more about the region's specificities while treating yourself! The hotel can also arrange special treats such as a vineyard tour in a jeep, a picnic, or a boat ride.

For those who want to relax, the landscaped pool is the perfect spot! There is also a spa (not tested by me) which has a jacuzzi, a Turkish bath, a sauna and a relaxation room. Many massages and facials are available by reservation.

My stay at Quinta do Vallado is one of the best memories of this road trip in northern Portugal. Its very "Relais & Chateaux" atmosphere gives it a welcome intimacy! The beautiful environment is perfectly showcased in this traditional quinta that combines classic with modernity and comfort. A confidential luxury hotel whose address is shared among insiders!

What I liked:

  • Superb terrace of the Superior Room, perfectly equipped to comfortably settle in at any time: read in the afternoon, have an aperitif at sunset or have breakfast
  • An all-inclusive nightly rate: snacks and coffee on demand in the afternoon, visit to the quinta and wine tasting, breakfast, etc.
  • A magnificent setting facing the Corgo River and its terraced vineyards

What I regretted:

  • Very dark room
  • Our breakfast was forgotten in the room, and we had to request it!

Practical Information:

  • More information on their website
  • Superior Room rate of €240 in late May 2021.
  • Don't hesitate to have lunch or dinner in Peso da Régua at Aneto & Table, delicious and with a great setting!
