The crescent-shaped remnant of a volcanic eruption, Santorini rises dramatically from the Aegean, its clifftop villages cascading down rust-colored slopes in layers of whitewashed cubic architecture. Oia commands the northern tip, where blue-domed churches punctuate the skyline and sunset crowds gather nightly along the marble-paved main path. Fira, the capital, offers a denser, more commercial energy — cable cars descend to the old port, and narrow alleys wind between jewelry shops and cocktail bars carved into volcanic rock.
The caldera's inner rim hosts most of the island's sought-after accommodation, many properties built into cliffside caves that maintain cool temperatures year-round. Imerovigli, positioned at the caldera's highest point, delivers quieter surroundings and unobstructed views toward the volcanic islets of Nea Kameni and Palea Kameni. Beyond the caldera, the eastern coast reveals a different character: black sand beaches at Perissa and Perivolos, the archaeological site at Akrotiri preserving a Bronze Age settlement buried by the same eruption that shaped the island, and the traditional village of Pyrgos with its medieval fortress architecture largely untouched by tourism.
