Rodrigues Island
Rodrigues Island
The island sits in the Indian Ocean east of Madagascar, formed by volcanic activity and ringed by coral reefs. Port Louis serves as the commercial capital, while Grand Baie anchors the northern coast with its marina and beach clubs. The plateau towns of Curepipe and Quatre Bornes offer cooler highland air. Flic-en-Flac and Tamarin frame the west coast surf breaks. Le Morne peninsula rises in the southwest, a UNESCO site tied to the island's history as a refuge for escaped slaves. The southeast coast around Mahébourg retains colonial architecture and fishing villages.
The hotel scene concentrates along the northern and eastern shorelines—Belle Mare, Trou-aux-Biches, Pointe aux Piments—where established resorts occupy beachfront plots with direct lagoon access. Newer developments have emerged along the west coast and in the remote southeast. Dining reflects the island's Creole, Indian, Chinese, and French heritage: street vendors sell dholl puri and gateaux piments, while coastal restaurants serve grilled fish with rougaille and vindaye curries. Rum distilleries dot the cane fields. South Africa lies several hours southwest by air, while Morocco occupies the continent's northwestern edge.
