The Abu Dhabi EDITION: When Luxury Meets Serenity

Florence Consul
By Florence Consul ·

Nestled between the sea and modernity, the Al Bateen Peninsula embodies another side of Abu Dhabi: one of peaceful elegance, away from urban bustle. It's in this privileged setting that The Abu Dhabi EDITION rises—a hotel where luxury is reinvented with discretion and refinement. Blending architecture inspired by Emirati maritime heritage, contemporary design, and a keen sense of detail, the property invites guests to a perfectly balanced experience—between international sophistication and local roots. Here, every space, from the bright lobby to the terraces overlooking the marina, celebrates harmony between nature, art, and well-being.

The Peaceful Charm of the Al Bateen Peninsula

Ideally located on the Al Bateen Peninsula, The Abu Dhabi EDITION enjoys a unique setting with spectacular views over the lively nearby marina. Nestled in a quiet, low-density neighborhood, it's just a short taxi ride from Abu Dhabi's main attractions, such as Saadiyat Island and the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. Perfect for a stroll, the marina offers a variety of restaurants within walking distance—ideal for a peaceful dinner after a day of exploration or a morning walk along the water.

A Design Inspired by the Sea and the Emirati Soul

The hotel's style and design embody a fresh vision of contemporary luxury, where every detail has been reimagined to create a sensory and harmonious experience. Conceived by Ian Schrager, pioneer of the lifestyle hotel concept, in collaboration with Marriott International, this property—the brand's first EDITION in the Middle East—pushes the boundaries of traditional hotel design. Like Abu Dhabi itself, a bold and forward-thinking city, the hotel combines minimalist elegance, local craftsmanship, and cultural influences to create a space that is refined, warm, and deeply connected to its environment.

The exterior architecture, marked by an openwork structure reminiscent of the lateen sails of traditional dhows, pays tribute to Emirati maritime heritage while blending seamlessly with a distinctly modern aesthetic. Inside, majestic volumes open onto an atrium with flowing lines evoking the movement of water—a symbol of the intimate link between the sea and the Al Bateen Peninsula. The softly lit lobby combines classic marble, walnut paneling, and golden accents, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. At its heart, a gold-leaf billiard table, a kinetic installation by Studio Drift, and armchairs designed by Emirati creator Latifa Saeed add a unique artistic and cultural dimension.

The common areas, such as lounges and corridors, extend this soothing and sophisticated design philosophy. Between lush greenery, evolving light throughout the day, and natural materials, every corner invites relaxation and contemplation. The whole forms a universe that is both cosmopolitan and imbued with local soul—a subtle celebration of the meeting between international modernity and Emirati elegance.

When Minimalism Becomes Refinement

The hotel houses 198 rooms and suites, as well as 57 exclusive residences, all designed with a spirit of contemporary sophistication. The design highlights natural materials and clean lines: gray oak parquet laid in herringbone patterns inspired by traditional Emirati weaving, neutral soothing tones, and large bay windows that let in soft light. Each space evokes quiet elegance, where comfort reigns without ostentation. The white marble bathrooms, accented with brass details, feature Le Labo products custom-made for EDITION in a refined scent blending black tea and bergamot. Local artistic and cultural touches, including dune photographs by American photographer Brett Weston, subtly recall the spirit of place.

The rooms and suites' aesthetics emphasize a serene, cocoon-like atmosphere where textures, materials, and light are perfectly balanced. Balconies offer peaceful views of the marina or city, while the furnishings combine functionality with contemporary design. Every detail—from the exceptionally soft linens to the refillable glass water bottles—reflects a desire to combine luxury with environmental awareness.

We stayed in a 49 m² Deluxe Marina Room, designed as an elegant retreat facing the sea. Its large picture window offered a splendid panorama of the marina, also visible from a tastefully furnished private terrace. The interior exuded a serene atmosphere, dominated by beige and light wood tones. The remarkably comfortable king-size bed stood beside a chaise longue inviting relaxation and a minimalist desk ideal for writing or simply admiring the view. The bright, spacious bathroom combined marble, brass, and fluid lines, featuring both a deep soaking tub and a rainfall shower.

A Healthy and Gourmet Breakfast at Market at EDITION

Breakfast is served at Market at EDITION, a bright and contemporary restaurant where the relaxed atmosphere perfectly matches the philosophy of the place: freshness, creativity, and well-being. In a setting mixing light wood, dark metal, and large bay windows overlooking the marina, guests enjoy a lively culinary experience thanks to the open kitchen, where chefs prepare dishes in front of diners. The “farm to table” spirit lies at the heart of the concept: each ingredient is used in its entirety, embracing a sustainable, zero-waste approach.

Breakfast, served until 5 p.m., combines generosity and refinement. An à la carte selection offers dishes as healthy as they are inventive—from green scrambled eggs with parmesan and alfalfa sprouts on brioche, to the signature French toast served with peach compote, whipped cream, and date syrup, not to mention barley porridge topped with dried fruits and warm spices. An elegant buffet completes the experience with fresh fruit, golden pastries, and assorted cereals, accompanied by organic coffees and cold-pressed juices.

High-End Gastronomy

The cuisine at The Abu Dhabi EDITION perfectly reflects the spirit of the place: creative, refined, and resolutely contemporary. Designed by British chef Tom Aikens, twice awarded Michelin stars, it revolves around three distinct culinary worlds, each offering a unique experience where product excellence meets attention to detail.

The signature restaurant, Oak Room, reinvents the British steakhouse in a setting of timeless elegance. Surrounded by oak paneling and bathed in golden light, the space celebrates the finest premium ingredients, particularly carefully aged meats. The experience stands out through its refined staging—glass butcher's counter, spectacular wine cellar—and an atmosphere that's both chic and relaxed. We had the pleasure of dining there last March, a memorable gastronomic experience detailed further in this article: Oak Room, The Exceptional Steakhouse at The Abu Dhabi EDITION

Overlooking the marina, Alba Terrace evokes the Mediterranean art of living. In a bright setting with natural tones, this restaurant offers simple and elegant cuisine: shared plates, light dishes, aromatic coffees, and terrace aperitifs. As night falls, the lights dim, lanterns glow, and the marina reflects in the calm waters—creating the perfect atmosphere for a serene dinner.

Finally, Market at EDITION, already known for its breakfast, extends the culinary experience throughout the day with a “farm to table” menu celebrating freshness and sustainability. To end the evening, The Library Bar offers an elegant retreat mixing velvet, dark wood, and creations inspired by the Silk Road—perfect for enjoying a sophisticated cocktail in a cozy ambiance.
