Our adventure in Bangkok continues with the Okura, a luxury hotel opened in 2014, which is the perfect combination of ultra-modern design and Asian influences. I was thrilled to find Japanese elements throughout the hotel, echoing the origins of the hotel group. Add to this a pool perched up on the 25th floor, three renowned restaurants and bars, and a spa, and it makes for one of the city's most chic establishments.
An Ideal Location to Discover the City
In this upscale embassy district just a stone’s throw away from ritzy shopping centers, Okura Prestige Bangkok has a prime location in the heart of the city, perfect for both business and leisure travelers. Its direct access to the metro is a major asset in view of the dense city traffic. Located between the 23rd and 34th floors of this ultra-modern tower, the Okura International Group opened its Thai location in 2014 to meet the growing demand of high-end travelers.
Japanese Elements Echoing the Hotel Chain’s Origins
The establishment’s design effectively combines clean lines and Asian influences, harmoniously blending elements from both Thai and Japanese culture. Its overarching philosophy of Simplicity and Elegance is best reflected in the majestic lobby that is found on the building’s 24th floor. It is here that we find the first examples of the tasteful Japanese aesthetics, such as reception staff dressed in kimono, which continues into the rooms.
240 Urban Rooms and Suites
The 240 rooms and suites are available in ten different categories, and I had the pleasure of staying in a beautiful 45m² Deluxe room. The large picture windows provide unparalleled glimpses of the city, while the interior design features a minimalist style in brown and cream tones. The elegant room displays Japanese accents everywhere – from the superb bathroom to the autumn leaf-patterned carpet, the yukata, and even the provided Sencha tea. Clearly, not a single detail has gone overlooked!
A Pool Perched on the 25th Floor
Perched up on the 25th floor, the infinity pool is an architectural marvel. It appears to be literally floating in the air and the view of the magnificent Central Embassy building provides an undeniable urban touch.
A Spa Featuring the Valmont Brand
The Spa is equipped with five treatment rooms, one with a jacuzzi ideal for couples. The massages on offer are based in various traditions, with particular emphasis placed on Japanese techniques such as shiatsu and Ta-Ke Relief which involves bamboo and principles borrowed from acupuncture. The catalogue would not be complete without a traditional Thai massage as well as facials featuring the prestigious Swiss brand Valmont, one of my personal favorites (as you may recall, I had a great Valmont facial at Le Meurice last summer).
Three Celebrated Restaurants and Bars
Elements, a restaurant awarded one Michelin star, is the place to be for a romantic dinner for two steeped in both French and Japanese influences. Whether on the terrace, which features a stunning view from the 25th floor, or in the chic dining room, the set menu of five, six, or seven courses offers only the most delicious flavors for a delightful evening.
As for us, we had dinner at the signature restaurant Yamazato, famous throughout Bangkok for its delicious Japanese cuisine. It serves kaiseki, sushi, and dishes cooked on a teppanyaki grill. The quality of the products is world class, with fish imported directly from Japan.
As for the trendy bar and restaurant Up & Above, it offers a quick bite to eat in the daytime, tea in the afternoon and, come evening, cocktails and international cuisine. Its handsome terrace with attractive views is the perfect location for a drink. We returned to the restaurant the next morning for breakfast, with an international buffet including delights from both Asian and Western cuisine.
The Verdict
The Okura Prestige Bangkok is the ideal luxury hotel for visiting the city with only a few days, with its ultra-central location being a major asset. While it will seduce lovers of design and contemporary aesthetics, it is its Japanese take on service and style that will charm even the most demanding guests. As for the dining on offer, the Michelin-starred Elements and the signature restaurant Yamazato are both reliable choices for an exquisite meal.
