Mamanuca & Yasawa Islands
Vanua Levu & Taveuni
Fiji sprawls across 333 islands in the South Pacific, roughly two-thirds of which remain uninhabited. The main tourist hub of Viti Levu hosts the international airport near Nadi and the capital Suva, but the real draw lies offshore — the Mamanuca and Yasawa island chains to the west, the Lau Group to the east, and countless coral atolls scattered between. Indigenous Fijian culture runs deep here: the ceremonial kava drink, meke dance performances, and the concept of 'Fiji time' shape daily rhythms. Many properties occupy entire private islands, offering the kind of seclusion that rivals French Polynesia at more accessible price points.
The dining scene draws heavily on the Pacific Rim, with fresh kokoda (citrus-cured fish), lovo earth-oven feasts, and Indo-Fijian curries reflecting the islands' multicultural heritage. Resort restaurants increasingly source from local farms and fishermen, while Suva's modest urban scene offers authentic Fijian-Indian street food. Unlike neighboring New Zealand or Australia, Fiji remains genuinely remote — a four-hour flight from Sydney, positioned just west of the International Date Line. The wet season runs November through April, though brief tropical showers rarely disrupt travel plans.
