Between sky and city, the InterContinental Osaka embodies the perfect balance between modernity and serenity. A true urban refuge, this exceptional hotel blends international refinement with Japanese elegance, offering an experience as soothing as it is sophisticated. From the clean design of its light-filled rooms to the delicacy of its spa, every detail invites relaxation and contemplation. At the heart of this hushed atmosphere, the Lounge 3-60 stands out as a privileged place to enjoy an afternoon tea inspired by the art of matcha, where flavors, textures, and aromas echo one another in subtle harmony. A sensory journey suspended above Osaka, between pure indulgence and absolute refinement.
InterContinental Osaka: International Sophistication and Japanese Soul
The InterContinental Osaka reveals itself as a haven of contemporary luxury in the vibrant heart of the Kita district. Nestled on the upper floors of a modern building, the hotel captivates with its spacious, light-filled rooms offering hypnotic urban panoramas. Its refined spa, calming indoor pool, and gourmet dining — including a Michelin-starred restaurant — form a complete sensory experience. Ideally located just steps from Osaka Station and the best shopping addresses, it subtly marries international sophistication with Japanese spirit for a stay that is chic, comfortable, and deeply inspiring. We had the pleasure of staying there for the second time, an experience that once again confirmed the charm of the place (see our article here: InterContinental Osaka: A Prestigious Address for Exploring Western Japan).
A Gourmet Interlude at Lounge 3-60
Located on the 20th floor, the Lounge 3-60 is a true cocoon suspended above the city, where one can relax over signature coffees, refined TWG teas, or a carefully crafted cocktail. The place is particularly suited to afternoon tea, offered daily as an elegant interlude combining delicate sweets and savory bites to enjoy while gazing at Osaka's sweeping views. A gourmet and contemplative moment, ideal for sharing a lovely afternoon as a couple or with friends.
The Art of Japanese Tea, InterContinental Style
We had the pleasure of savoring their Matcha Afternoon Tea, a seasonal edition highlighting the aromatic depth and delicate bitterness of matcha. The finely crafted sweets reveal subtle Japanese notes, while the savory bites evoke the warm flavors of autumn. To accompany these creations, the InterContinental Osaka offers TWG signature teas. Seated in the Lounge 3-60 with the city stretching endlessly below, this sophisticated tea time becomes a moment of pure indulgence — which can be elevated with a glass of Louis Roederer champagne for an even more festive touch.
The Matcha Afternoon Tea, as elegant as it is indulgent, is served in a stunning wooden box reminiscent of a culinary treasure. The carefully curated presentation highlighted a perfect harmony between Japanese tradition and contemporary sophistication. Every detail, from the origami crane to the delicate seasonal beverages, invited quiet contemplation.
The savory selection revealed a true autumn palette: the duck mille-feuille played on the richness of confit and flaky pastry, enhanced by a perfectly balanced sweet-savory note; the sea bream tartare with yuzu brought a lively, almost lemony freshness, creating a lovely contrast with the comforting, melt-in-the-mouth chestnut and thick bacon quiche. The matcha and shrimp roll, deep green in color, embodied the meeting of land and sea, with the characteristic herbal note of Japanese green tea.
On the sweet side, the symphony of matcha unfolded in subtle nuances: the matcha and candied orange tart paired the tea's bitterness with the bright acidity of citrus; the matcha, apricot, and anise mousse surprised with its delicate balance between fruity sweetness and refined spice. The matcha pudding with brown sugar jelly offered a smooth, melt-in-the-mouth texture, elevated by a light caramelized flavor, while the matcha praline truffle left a buttery, cocoa-rich, and vegetal impression. Finally, the fig scone, still warm, served with clotted cream and homemade jam, ended the tasting on a familiar, comforting note.
For beverages, we chose the TWG signature InterContinental Osaka Beppu Original Blend, with fruity notes of strawberry and apple on a Ceylon base, along with a Jasmine Queen tea boasting exquisite floral elegance. Seasonal drinks added a playful touch: an iced Vanicha Latte, a creamy blend of vanilla and matcha, and a silky, lightly spiced Pumpkin Latte, perfect for the season. Between the beauty of the service, the play of textures, and the panoramic view over Osaka, this tea time was a sensory, soothing, and poetic experience celebrating the quintessence of matcha in all its forms.
My Opinion
The Afternoon Tea at the Lounge 3-60 stands out as an exceptional experience, harmoniously blending Japanese tradition with contemporary refinement. Each creation, whether savory or sweet, celebrates the nuances of matcha through subtle and balanced combinations, served in a setting that is both elegant and indulgent. With its meticulous presentation, high-quality TWG teas, and panoramic view of Osaka, this suspended moment goes beyond simple tasting to become a true sensory immersion filled with poetry and serenity.
