The art of Afternoon Tea is a timeless tradition that finds exceptional expression at The Peninsula Tokyo, where refinement and creativity meet in a setting of elegance. Nestled in the heart of Marunouchi, this iconic luxury hotel redefines the afternoon tea experience by subtly blending Japanese and European classic influences. In this story, let’s dive into an unforgettable tasting moment, combining culinary delicacy and enchanting ambiance.

The Peninsula Tokyo: Excellence in Japanese Hospitality

The Peninsula Tokyo is a true icon of luxury hospitality in the heart of the Japanese capital. Unlike many establishments perched on the upper floors of skyscrapers, this hotel was designed as a true haven on the ground floor, welcoming its guests in a sumptuous lobby. Ideally located in Marunouchi, it borders the magnificent Imperial Gardens and is just a short walk from the bustling Ginza district, while offering a slightly withdrawn ambiance from the urban hustle and bustle.

Its refined style combines timeless luxury with contemporary touches, eschewing fleeting trends in favor of enduring elegance. The rooms, among the most spacious in Tokyo, offer spectacular views, high-tech amenities, and exceptional comfort. The culinary experiences, breathtaking panoramas, and exceptional spa treatments make The Peninsula Tokyo a cocoon of five-star Japanese hospitality. I had the pleasure of staying at this hotel a few years ago, and you can read my article about it here: My Tokyo Getaway at The Peninsula. It is also renowned for its legendary afternoon teas, which we will explore together here.

Art and Refinement: The Lobby of The Peninsula Tokyo

The lobby of The Peninsula Tokyo is a true work of art, where elegance and warmth blend harmoniously. At the heart of this sumptuous space is the iconic sculpture Lying Dragon Gate, a captivating piece that evokes an immense wooden eye, symbolizing the balance between tradition and modernity. The atmosphere is enhanced by the use of dark wood and sumptuous fabrics, creating a refined and welcoming ambiance. This place is not just a spectacular entrance but also a popular meeting point, attracting both Tokyoites and international travelers seeking excellence.

The Afternoon Tea here is an institution, served under a sparkling crystal chandelier inspired by hanabi fireworks and presented in birdcages elegantly filled with sweet and savory delights. For an even more memorable experience, the private balcony in the lobby, accessible through a secret entrance, offers an exclusive and intimate setting for four people, ideally located facing live musicians. Or, if you are staying at the hotel, you can also have it served in the comfort and privacy of your room or suite.

Peninsula in Pink: When Tradition and Gastronomy Support a Noble Cause

Served daily, the Afternoon Tea offers a gourmet interlude celebrating seasonal Japanese flavors. The carefully crafted menu includes an exquisite selection of cakes, savory sandwiches, and the famous Peninsula scones, accompanied by artisanal jams and homemade clotted cream. This assortment pairs perfectly with the Peninsula’s signature black tea or a selection of hand-blended organic teas by Art of Tea, ensuring a unique sensory experience.

In October, the Afternoon Tea is adorned in pink to support the breast cancer awareness campaign with the special edition Peninsula in Pink. This revamped version includes delicately pink-tinted pastries and sandwiches while retaining the iconic scones and classic sweets. It was the perfect occasion for us to savor the blend of culinary artistry and an unforgettable setting.

On the savory menu for this special edition, each bite was a true culinary masterpiece. Pink tapioca pearls, delicately paired with paprika mousse and tomato consommé, provided an explosion of flavors and a unique texture. The foie gras mousse, accompanied by slightly tangy rhubarb jam and a muscat and chocolate sphere, combined richness and finesse with a touch of sweet and savory boldness. The fig and onion tart, drizzled with balsamic cream, offered a perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. The pâté de campagne, presented with crunchy pickles and marinated onions, elegantly revisited a classic. The potato and beetroot rolled sandwich, filled with salmon rillettes and sprinkled with fish roe, combined freshness and refinement. Finally, the melting mozzarella, accompanied by a tangy tomato chutney and thin slices of prosciutto, evoked a taste of Italy in harmony with local flavors.

On the sweet side, each creation was a visual and gustatory delight. The white cheese panna cotta, enhanced by the sweet and tangy flavor of Jonathan apple, stood out for its lightness and freshness. The cheesecake, with its almond sablé base, combined creaminess and crunch in perfect balance. The lychee mousse, elevated by a floral touch of rose and a hint of grapefruit zest, offered an airy delicacy. The Biscuit Roses de Reims, accompanied by cinnamon ganache and raspberry sauce, paid homage to a great French classic with a touch of originality. The Mirror, a sophisticated marriage of chocolate mousse, raspberry namelaka, and a shiny glaze, was a true pastry masterpiece. Finally, the Pink Ribbon, with its chestnut and vanilla mousse on a walnut dacquoise, provided a soft and comforting note to conclude this gourmet journey.

To complete this experience, we chose a jasmine tea, whose floral aromas harmonized beautifully with the proposed dishes. This moment was complemented by a house cocktail, available in both alcoholic and non-alcoholic versions, specially crafted for this special edition. This duo of drinks added a personalized touch to this unique culinary celebration.

My Opinion

As a lover of refined experiences, the Afternoon Tea at The Peninsula Tokyo offered me much more than just a tasting: a true sensory journey in a setting filled with charm and elegance. Each bite was a work of art, each flavor a discovery. I particularly appreciated the delicacy of the creations, blending tradition and innovation, as well as the meticulous attention to every detail. This moment, accompanied by impeccable service, remains etched as a unique gourmet interlude that I will not miss revisiting on my next trip to Tokyo.
