Who hasn’t heard of the Grand Canyon? When I think of the great American West, my mind wanders immediately to the canyon, a geological formation more than 450 km (280 miles) long and 1.6 km (1 mile) deep! It’s easy to feel overwhelmed before such enormity!
Conquering the American West
In October 2013, I’m headed out for a month-long trip across the western United States, including big cities like San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Las Angeles, but also national parks like Yosemite or the Grand Canyon! The latter lends itself well to a bird’s-eye view, so I decide to take a 20-minute helicopter ride over this geological wonder!
Meeting My Traveling Companions
I enter the Tusayan airdrome, where I handle a few basic formalities before waiting patiently for my flight. When it’s time to leave, I head to the tarmac with the five other passengers, our pilot already waiting for us at his vehicle. We take our seats and, after a few adjustments, we’re off: the machine lifts off the ground with a deafening commotion and begins its flight over the trees in the direction of the Grand Canyon. We initially pass over a seemingly endless pine forest but after five minutes, we can already see it.
An Astounding Feeling
Overwhelming, captivating, fascinating… there’s no end to words to describe what I’m feeling at this moment! The flight over the canyon is impressive, and the scenery unreal in terms of scope and form: it’s grandiose. The colors now in the early afternoon are superb, and I feel so small in comparison to this natural site.
Is It Really Worth It?
The helicopter flight is, in my opinion, a good way to discover the canyon. It’s somewhat compatible with a visit to the heart of the canyon, but more than anything this flight helps you to understand the immenseness of the site: even after flying over it for 20 minutes, we see only the canyon stretching before us! I strongly recommend this experience if you’re going to the States, as it’s an exclusive way to explore one of the most beautiful places in the world.
