A small lane right in the middle of Saint Germain des Près, discreet facade with just a big “S” sign, at the entrance of this secret Parisian restaurant… When you enter this establishment, you are not only promised a good dinner, you are guaranteed a true gastronomic experience that I have had the pleasure of discovering during my stay in Paris.

When it was suggested that I try Steaking, I was thrilled by the concept : here is not just a restaurant, it is a subtle marriage between a cuisine which places the focus on meats of the world and a high end whiskey and cigar bar. The theme is seducing, now follow me for my visit !

20h : We discover the menu

While the glacial cold accompanies me along the Parisian streets, I cross the threshold of this superb renovated building. On the outside, it is a private hotel over 2 floors which have been completely renovated while preserving the place’s charm. The decor is worth it and it is rather chic and contemporary and marries perfectly with the old elements.

Once we are comfortably settled it, I page through the menu : on the menu, the most beautiful pieces of beef in the world, one can mention the famous Kobe beef (Japan), Wagyu (Australia), and Black Angus (USA). In summary, the choice is vast but not to worry, the waitron will help us in our choice. If you are still indecisive, you could order off the initiation menu which offers 4 pieces of beef for 2 people. If you want, everything can be basted in the wines of the world which are very well renowned : French of course, but also Spanish or Argentinian.

20h30 : The procession of dishes begins

The menu began with calamari and snails that we shared (I admit however a weakness for calamari that has been very well cooked) before being followed by an assortment of 4 meats : nothing like this visual level of pieces which are very different and you find the same thing on your taste buds!

Les chipirons : un régal !

To accompany this, they have opted for a system of “sides” like you will find especially in the United States. For us, it would be foie gras macaroni, a cheesy potatoes, green peas and piperade mix. I was extremely surprised with the great quality of the accompagnements, as I was with the quality of the prepared products.

To finish of beautifully, we allowed ourselves to be tempted by the cheesecake which is a speciality of the chef Arthur Girard and a tiramisu, not really serious ourselves after this massive meal but the temptation was too big …

22h : The bar

After this superb meal, it is time to climb the 2 floors which separates us from the bar ! Impossible not to be charmed by the “gentlemen’s club” decor, with Chesterfield armchairs and softened light. It was in this plush atmosphere, with a background of jazz music that we settled down to choose amongst a large selection of the best whiskies in the world. Obviously we found Japanese and Scottish whiskies but there were also lesser known spirits from India and Sweden for example.



My choice was a cocktail with a whisky base and red fruits amongst the dozen on the menu while my friend wanted to taste a set of smoked whiskies. On the cigar side, the choice is also vast : there is, for example, the Romeo and Juliette, the Montecristo and other great ones for sale. No need to worry, the barman is also a subtle cigar connaisseur and will advise you perfectly in your choice. A former smoker and having stopped for 7 years now, I was happy to admire my companion tasting a Cuban cigar (however, I did light it in order to taste it !!).

Who is it for ?

Let’s talk about who frequents it : even if the place is resolutely for dandy Parisians, the clientèle that uses the restaurant or bar is very heterogenous : there are a few couples, mixed groups and even on that evening, an exclusively feminine group came to taste cigars. In summary, le Steaking is a place for all occasions, but not exclusively for a masculine gentleman.

So, whether you wish to organize an evening with your sweetheart or if you are a group of friends looking for a great place in Paris, le Steaking could be a great alternative for spending a pleasant evening.

The verdict

We loved :

• The great decor

• The simple but well mastered cuisine

• The bar : without a doubt ! Ambiance, quality of the cocktails, and excellent service

• The heterogenous clientele

We didn’t like :

• The unequal service of the waitrons
