Biarritz is a pretty seaside resort on the Basque coast. If you know it, you have undoubtedly seen the splendid building that dominates the main beach of this chic commune: it is the Hotel du Palais, a true institution in the region but also in the whole world. I had the great pleasure of staying there a few weeks ago; I will be back with you on these 24 hrs in one of the most beautiful hotels in the world !
The legend of this 5 star
The Hotel du Palais is above all a place steeped in history. I have never been a huge fan of this discipline but for a few years now, discovering history by visiting or staying in places full of memories is something I greatly appreciate.
Let us return briefly to the past of this luxury establishment. In 1854, Eugénie asked her husband Napoleon III to build a summer palace at the place of her holidays when she was still a child. She appreciates this region so much and wants to spend more time there. For 16 years, kings and personalities succeed one another to attend the festivals and other festivities, all interspersed with the diplomatic obligations of Napoleon III. In 1880, the Villa Eugénie became a casino after its acquisition by a Parisian bank then it was in 1893 that it finally became the Hotel du Palais!
This rich history has animated these walls for more than 150 years and it is a real attraction for those who like me are sensitive to places full of memories. Just pass the doors of the establishment to find yourself transported to another era, between antique furniture and immense chandeliers. I am used to high class hotels but I must say that few of them have so much charm and elegance.
Very Stylish Rooms
The reception is both warm and professional, and after some formalities, we are accompanied in our Junior Sea and Beach Suite. The 2nd Empire style has also invaded the 152 rooms and suites which each have a unique decoration. Mine is absolutely beautiful with its dominant beige and pink notes that create a romantic and elegant atmosphere. Finally major asset of this suite: the view. Just open the windows to admire the ocean and the lighthouse of Biarritz. A large dressing room, a huge bathroom completes this suite of 50 m2 and a huge bathroom.
During my visit of this little jewel, I had the opportunity to discover two of the most beautiful suites of this palace. The most luxurious has a large living room decorated with furniture absolutely charming and this time, in a look 100% Second Empire. We add a large room but also a breathtaking bathroom: a huge round bathtub throne in the center equipped with a sauna hiding behind a frosted glass door! The best for this suite of 120 m2 where you have to spend several thousand euros to spend the night.
A Guerlain Spa
A detour by the spa is essentia l! On more than 3000 m2, we devote ourselves to personalized care. Stamped Guerlain, it offers a relaxation area with a swimming pool of 15 meters, a jacuzzi, a hammam and a sauna. The spa is very elegant; aesthetically it is in perfect continuity of the establishment. It is also very bright, which is rather rare but nevertheless appreciable. For a refreshing pause, I head towards the Lounge Eugénie where I am comfortably installed in bathrobe on my deckchair to appreciate a Alain Milliat fruit juice and a little sweet.
Time for diner
Before going to have dinner outside the hotel, we pay a visit to the Imperial Bar. Some piano notes will accompany us for this aperitif. The atmosphere here is really charming: softened light, excellent wine list and cocktails, attentive staff and jazzy music that makes the moment ultra-romantic! As for the gastronomy, it has in spotlight the restaurant La Villa Eugénie but also with L’Hippocampe during the summer season.
Enjoyment from breakfast…
The next morning, it’s finally time to test breakfast! This is for me one of the highlights of my stay since I am uncompromising about the quality of it. It is therefore with a certain impatience that I go in the gorgeous round dining room which offers an exceptional panorama on the beach. In the buffet, you will find the inevitable pastries, breads, meats and cheeses but also local specialties like this Basque cake with black cherry jam. There are also more original flavors like this Kouglof, an alsatian specialty that I particularly like. After this lavish breakfast, it is time for me to leave my magnificent suite whose charm and sight will undoubtedly miss me.
I’ve been dreaming to visit this palace and I am delighted to have been able to stay there. I particularly like places with a history, as it was the case during my stay in Ireland at Ashford Castle. Just close your eyes and for a few moments we are transported to another era. The service was flawless, the staff is so friendly and attentive, it’s easy to understand why the Hotel du Palais received the 2011 Palace award!
