The Basque coast is really a region that I like. First of all, its proximity to Toulouse makes of it a place that I have visited regularly over the years. When I was only a child I loved playing on the beach, later when I became a teenager all I loved hanging out with friends, now in my thirty, I only think of having walks, going to good restaurants and nice hotels ! In short it is a region that suits all profiles and that is what gives it this wonderful atmosphere… but always a tad chic !
Make a walk
On the Basque coast there are many small towns and villages. There are dozens of nice walks you can do but I will give you my favorites:
- The walk to the rock of the virgin in Biarritz
In my opinion, this is one of the city’s must-sees ! The setting is so pretty, especially at sunset when the sky is tinged with pink colors.
- A walk in the city center of Biarritz
This city is a real beauty ! I love its Art Deco and belle epoque architecture with its superb villas. It is a pleasure to walk in the small streets of the city center.
- A walk in Saint Jean de Luz
Saint Jean de Luz is a totally different style : many Basque houses surround the alleys of the town center, the red and white colors are omnipresent !
- The coastal trail:
It is 25 km of stroll along the coast that connects Bidart to Hendaye. The setting is beautiful but do not worry, you do not have to do the whole walk, just a round trip is already a treat !
With its 10 courses of very high quality and its mild climate, many golfers come to stay a few days to improve their swings. If you have never been on a green, you can also take advantage of it to do an initiation and discover the joys of this sport.
If there is one place in France famous for its waves and surfers, it is the Basque coast! It may be time to throw yourself into the water and take advantage to start practicing this sport. In Biarritz, there are no less than 18 surf schools, you are spoiled for choice !
Relaxation in Thalasso
After effort comes comfort ! Or you can also skip the sport section and go directly to the relaxation phase !! You will find many thalasso centers in the area according to your expectations. I thoroughly enjoyed the Grand Hotel Thalasso & Spa for its atmosphere that I found absolutely divine, it is far from the medical side of the thalasso we usually have on mind.
The small shops of Biarritz and Saint Jean de Luz are really nice. We find cute local brands, such as les Sandals d’Eugénie where I found beautiful espadrilles. There are also a large number of luxury brands such as Hermès and resellers of the most prestigious brands !
A snack at Miremont
After a good shopping session, let’s go to Miremont in Biarritz ! This tea room is a real institution here. The specialties such as the basque cake with cherry jam are delicious and the other pastries are just as much. On the service side, it is often not exceptional but we quickly forget it when we take the first bite…
Discovery of the hinterland
If you have a vehicle, head to the small villages of the hinterland. I can mention for example Espelette, a charming village renowned for its famous chilly. There are also beautiful walks to do on foot and other villages to discover. Do not forget the Rhune, which with its 900 meters of altitude offers a beautiful view on the littoral.
Go to a nice restaurant
The basque coast has 11 Michelin star establishments (2017 ranking), each of which has a star. You are therefore spoiled for choice to discover the local gastronomy, all with the help of a renowned chef. It may be an opportunity to enjoy a gourmet meal in one of these establishments.
Go to Casino
The casino Barrière de Biarritz is a real institution here. Its location facing the main beach is a privilege. Its Art Deco facade is a real wonder and for those who love the game, it is the ideal place to satisfy your desires for gains. And after all if you win the jackpot, you just have to take again the list that I gave you and go for a ride !
Stay in a 5-star hotel
If you are in Biarritz and you are attracted by old school architectures, you must absolutely stay at the Hotel du Palais. This palace is absolutely brilliant: impeccable service, generous infrastructures with a heated outdoor pool, a Guerlain spa … but above all its 2nd Empire takes us to another era. I invite you to read my article dedicated to it to know more.
In Saint Jean de Luz, I invite you to stay at the Grand Hotel Thalasso & Spa. This hotel combines the old and the new, but what really charmed me is its beautiful spa. Why not spend a few days with a dedicated care program? To know more about it, read my article about it here.
Enjoy this beautiful region in spring or fall when there are not too many people ! The small shops, restaurants and activities will be accessible but you can enjoy it with more tranquility. Regarding the number of days, it all depends on your program: you can very well spend 2 or 3 days there as well as spend the all week.
